My name is Rob and I grew up around the famous cheesetown
of Gouda in the Netherlands, but after finishing school and militairy
service I got restless, travelled to a few different countries looking
for more space, adventure, opportunities and better climate, and finally
found it in Australia.

After many years of travels I finally settled down in
Cape Tribulation in 1993.
I had never built a house before, only a coffee table and a pergola,
but I figured any idiot can cut bits of wood to the right length and
then nail the ends together, and so Rainforest Hideaway came to be.
Initially I occupied myself with building the house, then became the
local Harley tour operator, then a sea kayaking guide, bus driver,
long distance tour guide (Cairns to Darwin 6 day outback camping trips),
a couple of weeks as a rambutan packer at the local fruit farm and
then a B&B owner. I am a Gemini, described by the horoscope as
"Jack of all trades, master of none", which is a very handy
starsign for a B&B owner.

Previous careers....
Nowadays I try to minimize the time spent on the B&B
and maximize the time on my passion of sculpture, most days I am busy
mixing cement for the next project, so I may look a bit messy on your
arrival...
I hope you will find some time to explore the rainforest
sculpture trail that is slowly getting established on the property
by myself and visiting artists.

This sculpture is located at the northern end of Coconut
Beach in Cape Tribulation:

I usually escape the north Queensland wet season for
a while, Thailand has its dry season that time of year, but even there
I couldn't stop myself from getting creative with cement....

Sculptures in Thailand done on holidays
Besides cement I am also pretty handy with the chainsaw;
